Outcomes of ModiNomics 2014-24: A Report Card by SKOCH Group

Question 1: Quite a few journalists asked me the relevance of fractional employment schemes like MGNREGS and why they should be counted in my press conference yesterday.

Here is my answer using the reverse migration of Covid as an example wherein urban wage loss of the self employed was compensated by MGNREGS wages and free rations.

Should we ignore the existence of fractional employment?

Question 2: I was asked by a journalist as to why I have used scheme wise outcome data and not PLFS or CMIE data for my report?

The answer is that both of them use outdated macro economic methodologies that fail to capture actual targetted expenditure and its outcomes that are captured in scheme wise employment generation data.

Economists should make space for alternative methodologies that are micro economic and evidence based instead of sampling with meanigless questions.

Question 3: “What India needs is job generative, spatially dispersed, equitable and sustainable growth. GDP growth rate without these is meaningless.”

I told a journalist when asked about contribution of these jobs to GDP.

I think the question is upside down, we should only ask about contribution of GDP to jobs.

Question 4: Another journalist asked me about the timing of the report and how long we have been doing such reports?

Question 5: An economist, who happens to be a journalist fired a mouthful of questions from politics and timing, veracity of data and methodology etc.

I answered each question in detail and he went back satisfied.

It is better to engage and explain rather than confront people who disagree.

Question 6: How job generative growth improves the quality of GDP?

I answer to a journalist and also explain that labour intensive employment like pottery making, beauty parlour, scrap dealer and so on that has a credit of Rs 85000 per job can’t realistically contribute to GST or income tax.

Even journalists have been so attuned to economist talk that at times simple facts are not visible.
